Rock and pop music influenced the music of the Munich group 48nord as well as the bruitism of Edgar Varèse and classical and experimental music.
48nord consistently explores the possibilities of new technologies in connection with acoustic instruments. Always in search of unusual and original sound combinations and always looking for boundaries and transitions: between genres, styles and between compositional means and methods.

One focus of their work is the composition and realisation of music for dance and theatre. For more than a decade, the two founders Ulrich Müller and Siegfried Rössert have been working with Jacopo Godani, the choreographer and director of the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, as well as various other choreographers. 48nord has composed ballet music for the Bayerisches Staatsballett, the Nederlands Dans Theater, the Semperoper/Dresden, the Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, the Royal Danish Ballet/Copenhagen, the Sydney Dance Company, the Israeli Opera/Tel Aviv, the Stadttheater Gießen, the Australian Ballet/Melbourne, the Ballet BC/Vancouver, the Opera Zurich, the Opera Toulouse, the Royal Ballet van Vlaanderen / Antwerp, the Cedar Lake Company / New York, among others.

In 2013 Patrick Schimanski joins 48nord as a new member.

48nord have conceived and produced numerous radio play and audio art productions for radio stations such as Deutschlandradio Kultur, Bayerischer Rundfunk and Saarländischer Rundfunk.

In 2016 48nord were commissioned by ARTE and 2eleven (in collaboration with the Friedrich Murnau Stiftung) to re-record the complete UFA film "Wege zu Kraft und Schönheit" (1925).

They are also appearing live, for example at major international festivals such as "sounds like now" in New York," Controindicazioni" in Rome or "Jazz em Agosto" in Lisbon.

48nord have worked with musicians such as George Lewis, Bennie Maupin (ex Miles Davis), Charlotte Hug, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Lou Mallozzi, Wolfram Winkel, Markus Muench and many others. They were members of the George Lewis octet "Sequel" and founded the site specific improvisation ensemble "Munich Instant Orchestra".

48nord received a number of awards and scholarships and have been nominated twice in recent years for the Australian critics award (Green Room Award) in the category best composition and sound design.

In lectures and workshops 48nord presented their work at the Art Institute of Chicago and Columbia University/New York.
